Obtaining an Individual Tax Number (ITN) for Non-Residents in Canada | |
To file a tax return with the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA), non-residents need an Individual Tax Number (ITN) if they do not have a Social Insurance Number (SIN). ITNs are necessary for students without a SIN, non-residents earning rental income, those needing reduced withholding under a treaty, and others filing Canadian tax returns. Documents required include full legal name, foreign and Canadian addresses, date and country of birth, telephone number, purpose of applying, and identification. Supporting documents must have a wet signature. CRA can take up to six weeks to issue an ITN. Zoom appointments require two photo IDs and proof of address.
