Business address: 104 Portland St, Toronto, ON M5V 2N2 Location of work: Same as above Type of Employment: Full time – Permanent Estimated Start Date: As soon as possible Job Description: Assume full responsibility for the kitchen in the absence of the Head Chef Maintain records of food costs, invoices, sales, and inventory Analyze operating costs and other data Demonstrate new cooking techniques and new equipment to cooking staff Supervise activities of cooks and other kitchen workers Develop new menus featuring culturally relevant and authentic Jamaican dishes alongside Chef Instruct cooks in the preparation, cooking, garnishing and presentation of food Prepare and cook meals or specialty foods Order food and kitchen supplies and receive and store orders Arrange for equipment and building repairs Estimate food requirements and food and labour costs Ensure food meets quality standards Recruit and hire staff Train staff in preparation, cooking and handling of food Leading/instructing individuals Inspect kitchens and food service areas Clean kitchen and work areas: Ensure that all equipment is kept clean and kept in excellent working condition Coordinate timing of dish completion with other cooks Label and store or dispose of all unused items Oversee and ensure that restaurant policies on employee performance appraisals are followed and completed on a timely basis. Perform duties in accordance with Ontario Health and Safety Standards Conduct Line Checks and Pre-shift meetings prior to service Foster an atmosphere of respectful communication, cooperation and positivity among all team members Requirements: - Education: Completion of high school is required - Experience: A minimum of 5 years of experience as a cook is required. In the event that the candidate does not have 5 years of experience then equivalent credentials, training OR cook’s trade certificate is required. - Supervisory experience in commercial food preparation as a sous-chef, specialist chef or chef is required. - Experience and knowledge of Jamaican cuisine is a strong asset - Experience in high volume kitchen is a strong asset -Work Conditions and Physical Capabilities: Fast-paced environment, Repetitive tasks, Handling heavy loads (up to 20 lbs), Physically demanding, Manual dexterity, Attention to detail, Hand-eye co-ordination, Large workload, Work under pressure, Standing for extended periods -Personal Suitability: Positive attitude, Efficiency, Energetic, Goal-oriented, Hardworking, Integrity, Proactive, Time management, Collaborative, Dependability, Reliability, Team player, Organized, Effective interpersonal skills, Accurate, Initiative, Judgement, Client focus, Flexibility -Supervision: 10-12 people -Language: English is required Salary: $34.07 hourly, 40 Hours per week.
